Water & Sanitation

Challenges in Ruboni

In Ruboni, Uganda, the increase of population is leading to environmental degradation, water contamination, the destruction of water sources, and soil erosion. It is not common for a family to have clean and safe water to drink, and infections from unsafe water are not rare.

Families—mainly women and children—often have to walk long distances to collect water. Poor hygiene in the communities, including the lack of toilets and the absence of tap water, increases the risks even more. Women and children sometimes face assault as they collect water from the streams. Girls often drop out of school because they must provide water for the household before they go to class.

Our Initiative

Our initiative is to understand the problem in its full complexity and to find ways to increase safe water in the community in the long run. We aim to fundraise for sanitation projects to improve the general hygienic situation, reduce the risk of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, bilharzia, and cholera, and work toward providing safe and clean water.

A Major Step Forward: Ruboni’s Water and Bridge Project in 2025

Together with the support of Partnerschaft Gesunde Welt, two projects have been completed in Ruboni 2025: Building a Bridge and creating a major water and infrastructure.

Building a Bridge

One of the key achievements was the construction of a new bridge. This bridge serves several important purposes:

  • It protects the village from flooding,
  • It provides a safe route for children walking to school, and
  • It creates a secure connection between the village, the center, and surrounding areas.

Clean drinking water initiative

Alongside the bridge, Partnerschaft Gesunde Welt also supported a clean drinking water initiative, which has become a vital resource for the community. Thanks to this project, around 100 families now have access to safe and reliable drinking water. Each household contributes a small monthly fee of 2000 Ugandan Shillings, which helps ensure regular water testing and maintenance. This way, the water remains clean and safe at all times. The positive impact reaches even further: schools, the community center, and agricultural fields are now also connected to clean water systems—strengthening health, education, and food security in Ruboni.

Construction of pipes providing water up to our house was an essential change in my life. Before my children were fetching the water down from the river and spent hours on it. Now we have a tap and we are happy for it.

Rita, Ruboni community

“Water is a very major source for a community. That is why there is a proverb : WATER IS LIFE OR NO WATER NO LIFE”.

Geoffrey, Ruboni

Rwenzori Child Care Initiative and their donors provided our house with pipes and tanks. Nowadays we can be sure the water we drink is safe.
